Dieter Haemmerich

Chairman at Medical Engineering Innovations (MEI)

Dr. Haemmerich is Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina, and Adjunct Faculty of Bioengineering at Clemson University. He completed degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering (Vienna University of Technology, Austria), and Biomedical Engineering (University of Wisconsin-Madison).

Dr. Haemmerich’s research interest is in development of novel medical devices for treatment of cancer and cardiac arrhythmias. This includes surgical devices as well as devices for heat-based treatment of diseases. He is internationally renowned for development of heat-based therapy approaches, is a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society, and currently serves as President-elect of the Society of Thermal Medicine.

Dr. Haemmerich has authored or co-authored about 70 peer reviewed research articles, is on the editorial board of several scientific journals including Critical Reviews of Biomedical Engineering, and chairs the IEEE committee on Therapeutic Systems and Technologies.

In a prior business venture, in 1997 Dr. Haemmerich founded a software company that developed a music management system (similar to iTunes released 3 years later) specialized for dancing schools. The software rights were sold to another company in 1999, and software is still available today.
