Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer, State Historic Preservation Office at Michigan Economic Development Corporation

Martha MacFarlane-Faes currently serves as the Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, overseeing all SHPO operations, budget management, and staff direction since October 2010. In addition to this role, Martha is a member of the Board of Directors for the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers as of March 2022. Previously, from 1997 to 2010, Martha held positions within the State of Michigan's State Historic Preservation Office, managing cultural resource protection programs and environmental review processes, with significant achievements in expanding operational capacity and enhancing funding streams for development projects. Martha’s career also includes diverse roles in communications, customer service, and academia, holding a Ph.D. (ABD) in Architectural History, a Master’s in Art History, and a Bachelor’s in Art History from prestigious institutions.
