Gini Besant

Research Scientist at MicroMGx Inc

Dr. Besant received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Mahatma Gandhi University,India focused on the medical benefits of cyanobacterial species for the treatment of liver and kidney damage. Her postdoctoral research was at the Indian Institute of Science which led to the title of Principal Investigator. Dr. Besant’s research focused mainly on finding new therapeutic molecules for cancer and liver ailments.

Subsequently, at the University of Chicago, she studied the influence of the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of neurons on Alzheimer’s disease. At MicroMGx, Ginifocuses on the discovery of natural products through large-scale correlation of gene clusters with metabolites – a platform known as metabologenomics – which leads to thestructure-based discovery of natural products. She is also leading the effort to find new ways to activate silent biosynthetic gene clusters.
