Justin Butler is in his eighth season with the Timberwolves and Lynx, his fourth as Vice President of Technology. In his role, Butler is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction to the technology and facilities departments for the Timberwolves and Lynx, as well as overseeing technology on game days at the Target Center.
Butler was a driving force behind the success of T-Wolves Gaming, the franchise’s NBA 2K team, in its inaugural season which culminated in the team winning the 2019 NBA 2K Championship. A consultant for the team for the 2019 NBA 2K Draft and other team matters, Butler took over head coaching duties on April 30. T-Wolves Gaming won its last seven games of the regular season and became the only expansion team to advance to the playoffs. In the playoffs, T-Wolves Gaming swept Kings Guard Gaming and Warriors Gaming Squad in the first two rounds before defeating 76ers GC in the Finals.
Butler was originally hired by the Timberwolves in August 2013 as Director of Technology before a promotion to Senior Director of Technology in October 2015 and a promotion to Vice President of Technology in August 2017. During his six years with the Timberwolves and Lynx, Butler and his team have overseen the buildout of the practice and corporate headquarters at Mayo Clinic Square from a technology standpoint, and have been heavily involved in the technology projects including scoring systems, cabling, wifi, and CiscoVision during the Target Center Renovation project.
Prior to his time with the Timberwolves and Lynx, Butler was Vice President of Operations with TBS office Automations for 12 years. A native of Smith, Nevada, Butler is a graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. He currently resides in Cottage Grove, Minnesota, with his wife, Manyveth Khieu.
