Dominic Rüfenacht

Head of Science at Mobius Labs

Dominic Rüfenacht has a long and varied work experience. In 2004, they worked as a Second Lieutenant in the Schweizer Armee, where they learned how to efficiently analyze and solve tasks with lack of sleep and under time pressure. This allowed him to acquire good leading skills under difficult situations. In 2011, they worked as a Research Engineer at EPFL and as a Master Thesis at Philips, where they investigated the possibility of increasing the dynamic range of stereoscopic video content. From 2013 to 2018, they were a Research Associate (Postdoc) at UNSW, where they extended the novel motion anchoring paradigm proposed in their PhD to encode high density camera array (HDCA) imagery, and proposed HEVC-EPIC, which leverages coded motion vectors to obtain a fast, high quality optical flow estimator. In 2018, they joined Mobius Labs as Head of Science, Senior Computer Vision Scientist, Science Team Lead and Co-Founder, where they were responsible for leading the research efforts of video features and developing light-weight video analysis algorithms. In 2020, they became a Technical Advisor in Computer Vision R&D at Figment.

Dominic Rüfenacht's education history includes a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering from UNSW from 2013 to 2016, a Master in Communication Systems, specializing in Signals, Images and Interfaces, from EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) from 2009 to 2011, an exchange year in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Signal Processing from the University of Waterloo from 2008 to 2009, a Bachelor in Communication Systems from EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) from 2005 to 2009, and a High School Diploma in Applied Mathematics and Physics from Gymnasium Bern-Kirchenfeld from 2000 to 2003.
