Mariko Burgin

Mars Sample Return (msr) Program Break The Chain (btc) Domain Lead at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Mariko Burgin has an extensive work experience in the fields of engineering and scientific research. Mariko started their career as an Intern at European Test Services B.V. in 2007. Mariko then worked as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Michigan College of Engineering in 2008 and later continued as a Graduate Student Research Assistant until 2013. During this time, they focused on radar technology for geophysical parameter retrieval.

In 2012, Mariko Burgin joined the University of Southern California as a Visiting Researcher, where they developed a data-driven processing system for geophysical parameter retrieval. Mariko also contributed to the development of physical models for soil moisture estimation algorithms.

In 2014, Mariko Burgin became a Postdoctoral Scholar at Caltech, specializing in radar and radiometer instruments. Mariko developed algorithms and physical models for scene parameter retrieval from vegetated surfaces.

Mariko Burgin then became a Visiting Associate Researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2017, where they advised on the development of a soil moisture retrieval algorithm using spaceborne microwave radiometers.

In 2016, Mariko Burgin joined the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a Scientist in Radar Science + Engineering. Mariko led cross-functional teams in developing innovative methods for global parameter estimation, marine debris detection, and soil moisture product development.

At NASA JPL, Mariko Burgin also held various leadership positions including Mars Sample Return (MSR) Program Break The Chain (BTC) Domain Lead, Mars Sample Return (MSR) Particle Analyses and Control (PAC) Team Lead, and Advanced Concept Studies Facilitator. Mariko was responsible for ensuring technical success, developing baseline architectures, and facilitating concept studies for new NASA missions.

Overall, Mariko Burgin's work experience demonstrates their expertise in radar technology, geophysical parameter retrieval, and technical leadership in developing innovative solutions for space missions.

Mariko Burgin has a strong education background in Electrical Engineering. Mariko obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from the University of Michigan - Rackham Graduate School in 2013, and prior to that, they earned a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the same institution in 2011. Mariko also holds a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from ETH Zürich, which they completed between 2002 and 2008. Additionally, they have obtained additional certifications in areas such as leading engaging virtual meetings and facilitation.
