Janet Mills started their career in 1983 as an Advertising Copywriter at Belk Store Services. In 1989, they joined the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, where they held various roles including Development Director, Chapter President, Associate Vice President of Field Operations, and Vice President of Human Resources. In these positions, they were responsible for staff development, training, leadership development, and performance management.

Janet Mills holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In 2017, they obtained a certification as a Certified Strengths Coach from Gallup.
