Francesco Carpanese, Ph.D

Machine Learning Application Engineer at Neural Concept

Francesco Carpanese, Ph.D has a diverse range of work experience in the field of machine learning and engineering design. Francesco is currently employed at Neural Concept as a Machine Learning Application Engineer, where they apply 3D Deep Learning to accelerate the engineering design cycle. Francesco'sresponsibilities include leading Proof Of Concepts projects with customer engineering and design teams, as well as developing AI surrogate models for physics simulation.

Prior to this role, Francesco worked at Neural Concept as an IT Operations Manager, where they deployed the Neural Concept Shape SaaS on various architectures, ranging from on-premises air-gapped HPCs to public clouds. Francesco led the deployment and support for 10+ customers and supported customer IT in selecting and designing scalable architecture solutions.

Before their time at Neural Concept, Francesco was a Research Engineer Intern at DeepMind from October 2020 to June 2021. Francesco also holds a Ph.D from EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) in Numerical Plasma Physics. During their Ph.D, they worked on projects such as developing a plant simulator for plasma shape evolution in tokamaks, creating a Bayesian observer for plasma shape estimation using MCMC, and designing, testing, and deploying linear controllers for plasma evolution in tokamak experiments. Francesco also served as a Teaching Assistant during their time at EPFL from September 2016 to May 2019.

Francesco Carpanese, Ph.D, has a diverse educational background in the field of plasma physics and engineering. Francesco began their education in 2009 at Politecnico di Torino, where they earned a Bachelor's degree in Energy Engineering in 2012.

Following their undergraduate studies, Carpanese pursued a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering at Politecnico di Milano from 2012 to 2015. During this time, they were also selected for the prestigious Alta Scuola Politecnica per la Ricerca (ASPRI) program, which provided him with additional research opportunities.

In 2013, Carpanese participated in the Max Planck Society's summer university for plasma physics and fusion research, further enhancing their knowledge and skills in this field.

In 2014, Carpanese had the opportunity to further expand their knowledge and experience as a visiting Master Thesis student at General Atomics in San Diego, California. This experience allowed him to gain practical experience in the field of plasma physics.

In 2015, Carpanese began their pursuit of a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Plasma Physics at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Munich, Germany. Although the completion of their Ph.D. is not mentioned, it serves as an indication of their commitment to advancing their expertise in this field.

Overall, Francesco Carpanese's education history demonstrates their passion for plasma physics and fusion research, as well as their dedication to continuously enhancing their knowledge and skills in this area.
