Marcel van der Brug

Marcel van der Brug has a extensive work experience in the field of genetics and data sciences. Marcel is currently working as the VP Genetics and Data Sciences at Neuron23 since September 2022. Prior to this, they co-founded Character Biosciences in 2018, where they held multiple roles including Co-Founder & Chief Scientific Officer, and Co-Founder & Scientific Advisor. At Character Biosciences, they were responsible for leading scientific and therapeutic R&D strategies, using genetic, pathological, and clinical data to define subsets of disease, and identifying novel drug targets. Marcel also recruited scientific staff and built a research laboratory. Before that, Marcel was the Co-Founder & Chief Scientific Officer of Clover Therapeutics, a role they held from 2018 to 2020. Marcel founded Vivid Genomics, Inc. in 2017 and served as the Chief Scientific Officer. Marcel also worked at E-Scape Bio as a Group Leader in Biology Pharmacology & Biomarkers from 2017 to 2018. Prior to that, they held the position of Group Leader at Genentech from 2011 to 2017, where they led various programs related to ophthalmology and neuroscience. Marcel started their career as a Staff Scientist at The Scripps Research Institute - Florida campus from 2008 to 2011. Marcel also gained research experience as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health from 2003 to 2008, where they conducted studies on Parkinsonian genes. Overall, Marcel van der Brug has a strong background in genetics and has made significant contributions to the field through their research and leadership roles in various organizations.

Marcel van der Brug pursued their education at The University of Queensland. From 1993 to 1996, they completed their Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Hons) degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Marcel later went on to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Neural gene expression, which they obtained from the same university from 1997 to 2003.
