Peter Tompa

Co-Founder at New Equilibrium Biosciences

Peter Tompa is a biochemist and enzymologist with over 30 years of experience in the field. Peter received their PhD in biochemistry and enzymology from ELTE University, Budapest in 1991. In 1986, they began their career as a Principal Investigator at the Institute of Enzymology, ELKH - Eötvös Loránd Kutatási Hálózat. In 2011, they became a Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and a Principal Investigator at the Flanders Institute of Biotechnology (VIB). In 2019, they co-founded New Equilibrium Biosciences, where they serve as Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board. At VUB and VIB, they have taught regular courses in bioinformatics and special courses on IDPs, and has been the supervisor of 15 completed PhDs and 15 MSc theses. Currently, they are the leader of a group at the VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology that focuses on the structure-function relationship of IDPs and their role in LLPS, with a combination of a broad range of techniques of biophysics, molecular and structural biology and bioinformatics.

Peter Tompa began their educational journey in 1979, when they earned a MSc in chemistry from Eötvös Loránd University. Peter then went on to ELTE University in Budapest, where they earned a Doctor of Philosophy in enzymology in 1991. From 1991 to 1994, they completed a postdoc at the University of Oregon under the laboratory of Prof. Sidney Bernhard.
