Karmela Padavic-Callaghan is a Physics Reporter at New Scientist since April 2022, with a robust background in academia and leadership within the physics community. Prior to this role, Karmela served as an Assistant Professor at Bard High School Early College and held various positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, including Treasurer for the Graduate Employee Organization and Leadership Member for Women and Gender Minorities in Physics and Astronomy. Karmela has extensive experience in mentoring, teaching, and organizing events that promote diversity and professional development in STEM. Educational qualifications include a PhD in Physics and dual Bachelor's degrees in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Chicago.
