Gizem Aras has a diverse range of work experience in the field of data engineering, machine learning, and data science. Gizem is currently working as a Data Engineer II at NewStore, Inc. since 2022. Prior to this, they worked at Hürriyet as a Machine Learning Engineer from 2019 to 2022, where they focused on adapting machine learning technologies for the needs of a large media company, specifically working on natural language understanding for Turkish text processing.
Before Hürriyet, Gizem held the position of Data Scientist/Python Developer at Cerebro from 2018 to 2019. Gizem worked on the back-end of an autoML tool under the supervision of Asst. Prof. C.
In 2017, Gizem worked as a Machine Learning Intern at Evispot, where they implemented algorithms for predicting defaults, insurance risks, and analyzing spending behaviors. Gizem also presented their findings in meetings, wrote reports, and created tutorials to explain basic machine learning concepts to non-technical readers.
In 2016, Gizem was a Summer Research Intern at the Institute for Language, Cognition, and Computation at The University of Edinburgh. Gizem collaborated with Dr. Chris Lucas and caught the interest of the Digital Health Institute Scotland by predicting mood using data collected from smartphones.
Gizem also has experience as an IT Intern at OYAK-RENAULT in 2015, where they developed an SQL database for employee storage and implemented admin and user interfaces using PHP and HTML.
Additionally, Gizem served as a Voluntary Research Assistant at the Computational Visual Cognition Lab at The University of Edinburgh in 2014. Gizem assisted Dr. Antje Nuthmann in preparing a reading experiment using ExperimentBuilder for eye-tracking.
