Scott Carlson has a diverse work experience within the education field. Scott started their career as a School Psychologist in Sunset Ridge School District 29 in 2001. After six years, they transitioned to become the Barbara B. Rose Elementary School Principal in Barrington Community Unit School District 220, where they served for seven years. In 2014, they joined Northbrook/Glenview School District #30 as the Willowbrook Elementary School Principal, a position they hold to this day.

Scott Carlson received their Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Indiana University Bloomington in 1997. Scott later obtained their M.A.E./Ed.S. degree in School Psychology from the University of Florida Gainesville from 1998 to 2001. In 2004, they earned a Type 75 Principal Certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration from Loyola University Chicago. Most recently, they completed their Doctor of Education (EdD) degree in Educational Leadership and Administration, General from National Louis University from 2015 to 2018. Additionally, they obtained the Professional Educator License with General Administrative & Superintendent Endorsements from the IL State Board of Education in June 2005.
