SUMMARY

Northline Seafoods is a growing seafood processing company looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Vessel Engineer. Primary responsibilities of this position will be the safe and efficient operation of a CO2/NH3 cascade refrigeration system as well as leading a team of 9 electrical and maintenance staff. This position will be year-round aboard the barge in Bristol Bay, AK for 70+ days/year as well as oversight of maintenance, capital projects and post-season reprocessing activities during the off season in Bellingham, WA. As we grow, we’re looking for an all-hands-on-deck perspective.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Oversee the safe and efficient operation of a CO2/NH3 cascade refrigeration system with the support of a Senior Refrigeration Technician.
  • Coordinate, train and supervise a staff consisting of 9 electrical, refrigeration, and maintenance technicians.
  • Oversee and perform predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on all barge systems including power generation, refrigeration plant, electrical, fuel, HVAC, pneumatics, hydraulics, pumps, motors and controls, reverse osmosis, emergency, and deck equipment.
  • Ensure proper manpower, material, and equipment for all maintenance related activities, including overseeing inventory, critical spares, organization, and storage.
  • Ensure completion of required safety trainings, with an emphasis on OSHA and Coast Guard regulations.
  • Manage the maintenance team emphasizing safety and a zero-accident tolerance mentality.
  • Serve as the boots-on-the ground liaison to lead off-season maintenance and capital projects.
  • Run all barge systems in the off-season to support the reprocessing of products to meet orders.
  • Maintain the barge and engine room areas in a clean and orderly fashion knowing that the barge can be inspected by state and federal agencies with or without advance notice.
  • All other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience operating refrigeration systems is a must for this role.
  • Previous experience operating a CO2/NH3 cascade refrigeration system, or the ability to learn operation, in conjunction with a refrigeration engineer over the first season of operation.
  • At least 3 years’ experience supervising a team, preferably across all aspects of maintenance.
  • Previous experience working aboard a processing ship/barge is a definite plus.
  • Advanced knowledge of all barge systems including, but not limited to, power generation, refrigeration plant, electrical, fuel, HVAC, pneumatics, hydraulics, pumps, motors and controls, reverse osmosis, emergency, and deck equipment.
  • Ability to develop, implement and train staff in safety protocols, with particular emphasis on OSHA and Coast Guard regulations.
  • Clearly communicate both verbally and in writing with the maintenance staff and contractors.
  • Ability to solve problems and make clear rational decisions in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to work 12+ hour days 7 days per week over a 70+ day season.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds individually, or up to 100 pounds with assistance.

The Senior Vessel Engineer position operates primarily on a barge at sea in Bristol Bay, AK during the season with off season responsibilities aboard the vessel in Bellingham, WA. This role routinely runs the refrigeration and power generation systems while also overseeing the maintenance of all electrical and mechanical equipment. Employee must be able to stand, walk and generally navigate a barge setting in a wet and cold environment for long periods of time. Ability to lift 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
