Omar Bernal

Executive Director, IT at Northwestern College

Omar worked in the food industry for several years before beginning his career with Northwestern College. He held various supervisory positions in Nestle Foods as well as Kitchens of Sara Lee.

Omar attended Northwestern College and graduated as a Computer Programmer. Degree in hand, he switched careers to follow his passion for working with computers and in the fall of 1987, Omar joined the NC family as Data Processing Supervisor.

During his first few years at Northwestern College, Omar began working on an ambitious project to build a homegrown Student Record System that would take the College into the 21st century. It took him four years to complete the project that was named C.A.R.D.S, College Administrative Relational Database System. C.A.R.D.S was implemented campus-wide in 1996 and successfully used for over 11 years. Omar considers C.A.R.D.S the greatest accomplishment of his career.

Over his 30 years at Northwestern College, Omar has held the positions of Data Processing Director, Chief Information Officer, and currently he is our Executive Director of IT. In 1999, Omar was the first NC recipient of the President’s Award, he also has received many other awards including Outstanding Achievement, and Department of the Year.

Over the years, Omar has always enjoyed helping others and believes in providing great customer service to students, faculty, and staff. He strongly believes that we all play an important part in student success at NC.

In his spare time, Omar enjoys several hobbies such as photography, karaoke, and Salsa dancing.

Chicago’s oldest career college, Northwestern College (formerly known as Northwestern Business College) founded in 1902 by J.F. Fish, is a privately owned for-profit College. With this vision that businesses would need competent, well-trained workers, the College opened its doors offering programs in accounting and stenography. In addition to nursing and radiography, the college offers an associate in applied science degrees in Health Information Technology and Business Administration; baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration and Health Information Technology; and certificates in Dental Assisting, Medical Assisting, and Coding Specialist.
