River Nicholas Hume has a long and varied work experience. River Nicholas began their career in 1995 as an Information Technology & Energy Sustainability Consultant for self-employment. In 2002, they became a Maintenance Technician for Humboldt State University's Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT). In 2003, they were a Design & Sales Representative and Energy Efficiency Consultant for Cooperative Community Energy. In 2006, they were a Teacher's Assistant (Engineering Design Process) at Humboldt State University, and Co-Founder and Advisor of Sustainable Hosting, LLC., where they were the Managing Director, chief strategist, purchasing decision maker, management, systems admin, and QA. In 2008, they were an Engineering Assistant at EnerNOC, and in 2010, they were Co-founder and Design Director of Neuroluminous. From 2012 to 2013, they were an HVAC and Solar Installer and Sales Agent for Scurfield Solar & Heating, and from 2013 to 2016, they were an Automation Application Engineer for American Mechanical Inc. Finally, in 2016, they became a Software & DevOps Developer/Manager at Novaseek Research, where they architected and developed backend software, managed a globally distributed network of developers and technicians, and spearheaded the adoption of devops practices and tools.

River Nicholas Hume began their educational journey at Dickinson College from 1994 to 1995, where they studied Computer Science and Music Theory. River Nicholas then attended The Evergreen State College from 1996 to 1997, where they studied Artificial Intelligence. Afterward, they attended Humboldt State University from 2005 to 2012, where they earned an Environmental Resource Engineering degree with a focus in Energy Efficiency and Renewables and a Minor in Computer Science. In 2004, they obtained a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) 2.0 Accredited Professional certification from the United States Green Building Council. In 2009, they obtained a California Certified Engineer In Training (EIT) certification from the California Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. In 2013, they obtained a Reliable Controls Level 3 Certified Technician certification from Reliable Controls. In 2014, they obtained a Tridium NiagaraAX Certified Systems Integrator certification from Controlco.
