Nicolò F.

Senior Security Researcher at Nozomi Networks

Nicolò F. is currently working as a Senior Security Researcher at Nozomi Networks since November 2022. Prior to this role, they worked at an undisclosed company from January 2019 to October 2022 as an Offensive Security Engineer / Malware Analyst, where they designed and developed offensive security tools targeting Linux kernel/user space and embedded/IoT devices. Nicolò also re-implemented or customized Linux malware for safe emulation of real threat actors' tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs).

Before that, Nicolò worked at Adant from January 2018 to September 2019 as a Reverse Engineer / Embedded Software Engineer. In this role, they were responsible for reverse engineering and binary instrumentation of wireless chipset firmwares, developing Linux kernel drivers, and conducting manual secure code reviews.

From January 2016 to December 2017, Nicolò worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Università di Trento, specializing in reverse engineering Wi-Fi chipsets for custom MAC protocols. Nicolò also served as a Visiting Researcher at The University of Edinburgh from September 2014 to April 2015, where they designed algorithms for performance optimization in multi-cell wireless networks.

At CNIT - National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications, Nicolò worked as an Embedded Software Engineer from April 2012 to July 2014. In this role, they developed PHY initialization code and implemented features for IEEE 802.11n amendment. Nicolò also designed and developed the Wireless Mac Processor (WMP) architecture for MAC protocol interoperability.

Nicolò also worked at Adant Srl as an Embedded Software Engineer from August 2013 to June 2014, where they integrated proprietary algorithms into Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets and developed Linux kernel drivers compatible with QCA and Broadcom enterprise SDKs.

Lastly, Nicolò completed their Master of Science thesis project at Università degli studi di Brescia from August 2011 to March 2012, where they designed and implemented an anonymous reputation system with authentication based on anonymous credentials. Nicolò also worked on their Bachelor of Science thesis project at the same university from April 2009 to August 2009, focusing on the design and implementation of a sniffer for IEEE802.15.4 standard's frames using Java programmable embedded wireless devices.

Nicolò F. completed their education history in a chronological order. From 2013 to 2016, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree in Telecommunication Engineering at Università degli Studi di Brescia. Prior to that, from 2009 to 2012, Nicolò obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Information Technology Engineering from the same university. They also completed a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Information Technology Engineering from 2006 to 2009 at Università degli Studi di Brescia. Additionally, Nicolò attended Liceo Fermi di Salò from 2001 to 2006, where they obtained a Scientific high school degree.

Nicolò has obtained several additional certifications as well. These include GIAC Exploit Researcher and Advanced Penetration Tester (GXPN) from GIAC Certifications in September 2021, GIAC Cyber Threat Intelligence (GCTI) from GIAC Certifications in April 2021, Nozomi Networks Certified Engineer from Nozomi Networks in December 2022, and GIAC Certified UNIX Security Administrator (GCUX) from GIAC Certifications in November 2020.
