Melissa Mayhew has a strong background in environmental science and management. Melissa has been working at the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) since 2010 as a Senior Environmental Scientist. In this role, they are responsible for designing and managing environmental programs to support Canada's long-term management of used nuclear fuel. Melissa has made significant contributions to the advancement of the organization's mandate, including leading biodiversity and impact assessment programs in collaboration with various stakeholders. Melissa has also established and manages a multi-national advisory body that provides expert advice on environmental programs. Additionally, Melissa is recognized as a leader in incorporating Indigenous Knowledge and promoting sustainable relationships between stakeholders as part of the organization's commitment to reconciliation. Prior to joining NWMO, Melissa worked as a Senior Environmental Assessment Project Manager at Golder Associates from 2004 to 2009, where they managed large-scale environmental assessments for the nuclear industry. Melissa also has prior experience as a Research Assistant at the University of Oulu in 2002 and as a Research Intern at GKSS Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH in 2000.
Melissa Mayhew has a history of education that includes earning a Honors Bachelor of Science in Environmental Protection from the University of Guelph, where they studied from 1996 to 2000. Melissa also obtained a Master of Science in Ecology from Trinity College Dublin, for which they attended from 2002 to 2003.
