Ernesto Fernández Monge currently serves as the International Oceans Director at Oceans North since October 2024. From September 2018 to September 2024, Ernesto held the position of Senior Officer, Conservation Support at The Pew Charitable Trusts, focusing on the intersection of trade and environmental issues, particularly harmful subsidies and plastic pollution. Prior experience includes roles as an International Trade Consultant at the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank Group, and as a Senior International Trade Consultant for the Organization of American States. Ernesto also contributed to trade policy education as an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University Law Center. With a background as a counsellor and trade negotiator for the Ministry of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica, Ernesto has extensive experience in international trade agreements and negotiations, notably within the WTO framework. Academic qualifications include an LLM in International Trade Law and EU Law from the University of Amsterdam and a Bachelor's degree in Law from Universidad Autónoma de Centroamérica.
