Director Of Sensor Technology Development

Engineering · New York, United States

Job description

Who we are at Osmo:

Osmo is a digital olfaction company, on a mission to give computers a sense of smell to improve the health and wellbeing of human life. Why? Our sense of smell both enriches and saves lives, and has a deep and direct connection to our emotions and memory. Vision and hearing have been digitized, but not scent. It’s time we solve this. We’re bringing an unprecedented combination of software, data, hardware and capital to the historic challenge of giving computers a sense of smell.

We believe in the power of automation and carefully applied AI/ML to solve problems that are beyond what the unaided human mind can tackle on its own. In the first phase of our development, we are using our map of odor along with cutting-edge generative AI to create the next generation of aroma molecules (e.g., the ingredients in the fragrances we wear and the products we use). Beyond fragrance machine olfaction has application across many industries, including manufacturing, military, medicine, and more. Working for Osmo means solving problems using digital olfaction for these customers. We're a hybrid company with a laboratory and center-of-mass in New York, NY and offices in Somerville, MA.

Osmo is hiring an accomplished engineer or physicist to lead our sensor technology development team in our NYC lab. This individual will be responsible for the full lifecycle of sensor technology platforms, from initial concept and design to customization, implementation, and sales. The successful candidate will possess deep expertise in a variety of chemical detection sensor technologies, strong data analytics capabilities, and proven leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sensor Technology Development:
    • Lead the research, development, and customization of sensor technology platforms for chemical detection.
    • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in sensor technologies and evaluate their potential applications for the company.

  • Customer Engagement and Sales:
    • Work closely with customers to understand their needs and requirements.
    • Customize sensor technology platforms to meet specific customer demands.
    • Provide technical support and training to customers during the installation and implementation process.
    • Collaborate with the sales team to identify and pursue new business opportunities.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Manage and mentor a small team of exceptional engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering a collaborative environment.
    • Set clear goals and objectives for the team and ensure they are met.
    • Encourage innovation and professional development within the team.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Master's or Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Experience:
    • 7+ years of experience in developing and implementing sensor technology platforms, with a strong focus on chemical detection.
    • Demonstrated expertise in various sensor technologies, including IMS, absorption spectrometry, Raman spectrometry, e-nose technologies, and pre-separation technologies like gas chromatography.
    • Proven ability to analyze and interpret large datasets, with experience in applying machine learning or statistical modeling to sensor data.
    • Track record of successful project management and delivery.
    • Prior experience leading and mentoring a team of engineers.
    • Exposure to breath capture/diagnostics, animal husbandry and fragrance evaluation applications is a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Strong technical and analytical skills.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
    • Comfort with both hands-on technical work and strategic leadership.
