Kim Johnson

Team Lead, Portland at PaleoWest

Kim Johnson has been with PaleoWest for just over a year, but their career in GIS and historical research spans almost a decade. Kim began their career at Oregon State University, where they worked as a field foreman and research specialist. There, they helped teach and manage the student workers at the 2016 Theirtorical Archaeology Field School. In addition to their teaching duties, Kim also performed research to help further the knowledge of the site. Additional duties included analyzing excavated materials, report writing, map generation, and archival research.

In October 2017, Kim left Oregon State University to take a position with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department as an Information Systems Specialist (GIS). In this role, they were responsible for creating a GIS database in ArcMap for historic US Army Corps of Engineers aerial photos following state published guidelines for curating photogrammetric data. Kim also reviewed scanned aerial photos for quality control, created an index of aerial flight line data for user reference, selected photo groups for sample projects and test runs, georeferenced aerial photos, and obtained control points for photo mosaic datasets. Kim also worked with GIS specialist to create rectified photo mosaics for import into ArcMap.

Kim joined PaleoWest in July 2018 as a team lead in Portland. In their current role, they manage a team of archaeologists and works on a variety of projects in the Pacific Northwest.

Kim Johnson achieved a Masters of Science in Applied Archaeology from Oregon State University. Prior to that, they completed a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology and another Bachelor's Degree in Natural Resources Management and Policy, also from Oregon State University. Kim is certified by the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) in RPA.
