Karen Garvey

Vice President Safety & Clinical Risk Management at Parkland Health

Karen Garvey has extensive experience in risk management and patient safety in the healthcare industry. Karen currently serves as the Vice President of Safety & Clinical Risk Management at Parkland Hospital, where they lead global patient safety initiatives and is a subject matter expert in compliance. Karen also holds positions at various organizations, including the American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM) and IHI, where they serve as a member of the Board of Directors and National Teaching Faculty. Karen has previously held leadership roles at Cleveland Clinic, Tenet Healthcare, and The MetroHealth System, where they oversaw clinical risk management programs and implemented patient safety initiatives.

Karen Garvey, DFASHRM, CPPS has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from The University of Akron, obtained between 1989 and 1994. Karen also holds a Master of Public Administration in Healthcare Administration (MPA/HCA) from Cleveland State University, earned between 1999 and 2001. In 2007 and 2008, Karen completed a Fellowship in HRET National Patient Safety Leadership at HRET/IHI. Additionally, they have obtained several certifications, including Distinguished Fellow in Healthcare Risk Management (DFASHRM) from the American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM) in 2017, Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) from ASHRM in 2011, and Certified Professional in Patient Safety from the National Patient Safety Foundation in 2014.
