Bernard Underwood

Bernard Underwood has a diverse work experience in the maritime industry. Bernard started their career as an Engineering Cadet at Matson, Inc., where they gained experience as a U.S. Coast Guard licensed engineer. After that, they interned at Gulf Copper and Manufacturing, where they rotated between different departments and gained an understanding of how the company functions.

Later, Bernard joined Ensco plc's Engineer/Management Program, where they rotated through various positions aboard drilling vessels and gained experience in diesel generators, purifiers, compressors, motors, and other equipment. Bernard was also involved in the Work Instruction Management System (WIMS) project, where they contributed to creating efficient work instructions for maintenance and repair.

Bernard also worked at Rowan Companies as an Engine Room Operator and at the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association as a USCG Chief Engineer. Bernard served in the US Navy Reserve as a Lieutenant, specializing as a licensed U.S. Coast Guard 2nd Assistant Engineer.

In their most recent position at APL, Bernard is currently working as a First Assistant Engineer.

Bernard Underwood obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Marine Engineering Systems and Design, with a minor in Electrical Engineering, from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Bernard also has additional certifications including being an Offshore Installation Manager - Unrestricted from the U.S. Coast Guard. Additionally, they obtained certifications such as Subsea 100 and Subsea 101 from Subsea Solutions, Hydril - Mux Controls Hydraulics from GE Oil & Gas, IWCF Supervisor: Well Control Combined Surface and Subsea from the International Well Control Forum, Murchison Drilling Schools Operational Drilling Technology and Advanced Well Control from Murchison Drilling Schools, Inc., Fundamentals of Hydraulics from National Oilwell Varco, Basic and Advanced Firefighting from the U.S. Coast Guard, Drilling/Completion/Workover Supervisor (Surface/Subsea) from Intertek, Hazardous Area Electrical Training from the International Association of Drilling Contractors, and Licensed 3rd Assistant Engineer (Motor/Steam/Gas Turbines) from the U.S. Coast Guard. Additionally, Bernard has taken courses in SCR Maintenance, Shaffer 5th Generation BOP Equipment Mechanical Course, Shaffer 6th Generation MUX Electrical Controls, and Top Drive System - TDX 1250 Maintenance Course from National Oilwell Varco.
