Maureen Savage has a long history of professional experience. Maureen began their career in 1985 as the Public Relations Manager for the City of Hampton, where they created and managed citywide public relations and marketing plans to meet strategic goals, provided effective citizen and employee communications, and achieved the highest-ever citizen survey rating. In 2002, they became the Project Manager at Protect Our Kids / Transitions Family Violence Services, where they directed an assessment/referral program, provided crisis intervention and specialized referrals to almost 350 families annually, wrote and received grants for more than $65,000 to help sustain the program and expand services, and created a community education/public relations/media campaign to build community support for youth living violence-free lives. In 2011, they took on the role of Assistant Director, Victim-Witness Services at the Hampton Commonwealth's Attorney Office. In 2014, they became the Director, Youth & Family Services at the Hampton Family YMCA and also began working as a Freelance Communications and Community Relations Owner. Finally, in 2018, they became the Association Program & Volunteer Engagement Director at the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA.

Maureen Savage attended Virginia Tech from 1978 to 1982, where they earned a degree in Public Administration with a focus in Business, Political Science, and Marketing.
