Thomas Egan

Engineering Geologist at Petra

Thomas Egan has three years of work experience in geology. In 2018, they worked as an Undergraduate Experimenter at Berkeley Lab, where they were a research apprentice to Prof. Michael Manga, imaging rock deformation via X-ray tomography and modeling crystals & void space in 3D with computer vision software. In 2019, they worked as an Undergraduate Researcher at the University of Minnesota, where they developed a novel technique for X-ray imaging of rock fractures for an interdisciplinary NSF project and generated 3D models for fluid flow simulation. Currently, they are a Junior Engineering Geologist at Petra, a deep tech startup developing new tunnel boring technology. In this role, they draw from testing and literature to build & test hypotheses connecting rock parameters to boring behavior, and applies knowledge of rock formation & mechanics to the issue of tunnel boring, including XRD, SEM, EDX.

Thomas Egan graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2020 with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Earth Science. Thomas attended the University of California, Berkeley from 2017 to 2020.
