Zihang Fang

Zihang Fang has diverse work experience in the fields of machine learning, research, and data analysis. Zihang is currently employed as a Machine Learning Scientist at Pictor Labs Inc since 2022. Prior to this, they worked as a Research Assistant at The Johns Hopkins University from 2021 to 2022, where they collaborated closely with pathologists to explore the applications of deep learning in digital pathology. During this role, Zihang created a Python module for flexible and scalable training on WSIs and developed a lightweight feature extractor with high performance and minimal weights.

Before joining The Johns Hopkins University, Zihang interned at Genentech in 2021, where they researched and developed frameworks to predict and quantify cell depletion severity levels in digital pathology WSIs. Zihang implemented pilot models to identify potential error sources in the internal pathology dataset and collaborated with pathologists to align the model outputs with pathology findings.

In 2017, Zihang worked as a Data Research Analyst at Boston Children's Hospital, where they improved and automated an MRI image analysis pipeline, resulting in significant time savings for neurologists. Zihang streamlined the retrieval process of patients' MRI data from the hospital's clinical database and automated image reconstruction and registration using shell scripts.

Zihang's early career experiences include working as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at Northeastern University from 2015 to 2016. Zihang gained hands-on experience in MRI-related research, performed animal perfusion fixation, and conducted manual image labeling and segmentation. Zihang also worked in an optical research lab, where they learned PCB basics, designed a PCB layout, and created 3D diagrams of optical devices. Moreover, Zihang served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate and graduate level courses in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

Zihang Fang completed their Master of Science degree in Biomedical/Medical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University between 2019 and 2021.
