Jon Owejan

Principal Engineer, MEA Development at Plug Power

Jon Owejan has a diverse range of work experience in the engineering field. Jon is currently working as a Principal Engineer in MEA Development at Plug Power since 2021. Prior to this, from 2016 to 2021, Jon was a Co-Founder at Phase Innovations LLC, where they were responsible for leading technical and business development for water vapor transfer systems. Jon demonstrated technical feasibility and manufactured cost to NYSERDA and HVAC OEMs, and also showcased a novel commercial DOAS system with a COP greater than 4.

From 2012 to 2020, Jon worked as an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering Technology at Alfred State College - SUNY College of Technology. Jon delivered core and elective courses, advised students, ensured ABET compliance, and mentored undergraduate capstone projects. Additionally, Jon served as the Founding Director of the Energy Storage and Conversion Lab, conducting applied research in fuel cells, flow batteries, and thermally-activated cooling.

Earlier in their career, from 2004 to 2012, Jon was a Senior Research Engineer at General Motors, leading electrochemical transport research and collaborating with national labs and universities on fuel cell and lithium battery projects. These efforts resulted in optimized low-cost materials, improved durability, simplified systems, and increased energy conversion efficiency.

Jon furthered their education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where they earned their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering, studying there from 2010 to 2014.
