Karin Hatzold

Dr. Karin Hatzold is a public health physician with over 23 years of experience in designing, managing, implementing, and researching public health interventions in sub-Saharan Africa. She has led large-scale service delivery, research, and evaluation projects on HIV prevention, care, and treatment and has provided high-level technical support for platforms in Southern Africa for the launch and accelerated scale-up of Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision, HIV Testing, Biomedical HIV prevention, including PrEP and HIV treatment as well as Cervical Cancer Screen and Treat Services.

After obtaining her Masters in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine London focussing on HIV Epidemiology, Dr. Hatzold was co-investigator on several implementation science studies, including Male Circumcision Devices and Early Infant Male Circumcision, Sexual and Reproductive Health, HIV Testing and HIV Self-Testing.

Since 2015 Dr. Hatzold is the Director of the Unitaid flagship HIV Self-Testing Africa (STAR) project implemented in thirteen countries in Africa and Asia to catalyze the market for HIV self-testing. STAR’s success has been outlined by multi-country and multidisciplinary evidence demonstrating acceptability, accuracy, and scalability across several delivery models and populations with rapid translation into WHO guidelines and national policies.
