Michael Mitchell

Director, Human Resources at Port of Oakland

Michael Mitchell was appointed Director of Human Resources for the Port of Oakland in June 2018. He is responsible for managing operations that are 95 percent unionized and covered by four collective bargaining agreements. In this role, Mr. Mitchell has oversight of human resource functions including employee and labor relations, talent acquisition, classification and compensation, organizational effectiveness, workers’ compensation, employee benefits, safety, and employee wellness. Mr. Mitchell began his tenure at the Port in 2006. In 2016, he served as the Port’s Human Resources Manager where he established key business partnerships and created organizational efficiencies.

Prior to joining the Port, Mr. Mitchell was a senior human resources analyst with San Francisco Municipal Transportation, an enterprise department of the City and County of San Francisco, where he worked to support over 4,000 employees. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Hampton University, Hampton Virginia.
