Maren Wehrs

Director Of Bioprocess Development at Protein Evolution

Maren Wehrs has a strong background in fermentation and protein evolution. They are currently serving as the Director of Fermentation at Protein Evolution since 2023. Prior to this, Maren worked at Zymergen from 2019 to 2022, where they held various positions including Fermentation Scientist III, Fermentation Scientist II, and Fermentation Scientist I. At Zymergen, they led a team responsible for improving efficiency in tech transfer and process development, collaborated with interdepartmental teams to guide strain development and fermentation work plans, designed and analyzed fermentation experiments, optimized conditions for high-throughput screening platforms, supported tech transfer and scale-up efforts, and authored whitepapers to capture best practices. Before Zymergen, Maren worked at Berkeley Lab from 2014 to 2019 as a Doctoral Student and Research Assistant, focusing on the importance of host physiology for efficient production of target molecules. During this time, they engineered fungal hosts, optimized production of non-ribosomal peptides, and developed a metabolic engineering toolkit.

Maren Wehrs has a strong background in biotechnology, with a focus on research and academic achievements. Maren completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biotechnology from Technische Universität Braunschweig between 2016 and 2019. Prior to that, they obtained their Master of Science (MSc) degree in Biotechnology from the same institution between 2013 and 2015. Maren began their educational journey at Technische Universität Braunschweig in 2010 and earned their Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Biotechnology in 2013. In addition to their academic qualifications, Maren has also obtained a Lean Six Sigma White Belt Certification from Udemy in October 2022.
