John A L Short

Senior QC Scientist at QuellTX

John A L Short has a diverse work experience spanning from 2006 to the present. Their most recent role is as a QC Scientist II at Quell Therapeutics, where they started in December 2021. Prior to that, they worked at Autolus Ltd. from April 2019 to November 2021, first as a Senior Quality Control Scientist and then as a Quality Control Scientist. During this time, they were involved in performing QC assays for CAR T cell manufacturing and contributed to assay workflow development and validation.

Before their time at Autolus Ltd., John worked as a Research Scientist at hVIVO from January 2016 to July 2016, where they delivered clinical projects in a GCP clinical trial environment. John A L also worked as a Laboratory Operations Technician at hVIVO from February 2015 to December 2015, where they performed scientific experiments and processed samples for both internal and external clients.

Prior to their roles at hVIVO, John worked at the International Summer Programme, University of St Andrews as a Programme Delivery/Residential Assistant in June 2014 and July 2014. John A L accompanied students on trips around Scotland as part of the summer programmes.

John's work experience also includes roles as an IT Consultant at SOI Ltd (Scottish Oceans Institute) in December 2010, a Research Technician at The Astbury Centre, University of Leeds from January 2009 to June 2009, and a Clinical Technician at the University of Huddersfield from September 2008 to December 2008.

In addition to these, John worked as a Research Council UK Scholarship; Undergraduate Researcher at The Astbury Centre, University of Leeds from May 2008 to August 2008, an Industrial Placement Researcher at GlaxoSmithKline from September 2006 to August 2007, and a Wellcome Trust Scholarship; Undergraduate Researcher at the Anti-Microbial Research Centre, University of Leeds from June 2006 to August 2006.

Throughout their various roles, John has demonstrated skills in project delivery, laboratory operations, assay development and validation, documentation, and adherence to GCP, GMP, and MHRA standards. John A L has also participated in research projects related to CAR T cell manufacturing, viral transduction, protein expression, and bacterial cell wall synthesis.

John A L Short completed their education in two stages. Firstly, they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology with Immunology (Industrial) from the University of Leeds between 2004 and 2009. The focus of their study during this period was on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Subsequently, John pursued further studies at the University of St Andrews, where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Molecular Virology from 2009 to 2014.
