Joseph Chen

Director, Translational Sciences at ReCode Therapeutics

Joseph Chen's work experience spans multiple companies and roles over the past two decades. Joseph began their career as an Assistant Scientist at Unigene Laboratories, Inc. where they worked on improving the bio-availability of orally delivered calcitonin and PTH to treat osteoporosis. At Schering-Plough Research Institute, they participated in drug screening and toxicological assays in the allergy and neuroscience department. Joseph then worked as a Graduate Assistant at Rutgers University studying developmental biology utilizing neonatal pigs as a model while working towards their doctorate. At UCSF as a Postdoctoral Scholar, they researched the mechanisms by which usage of microbicidal spermacides enhances male-to-female transmission of HIV. At Siemens Clinical Labs, they optimized NGS based clinical diagnostic assays that could detect viral particles in blood. At BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc., they supported projects through the use of histopathology and molecular biology assays to characterize rare diseases in both in vitro and in vivo animal models. Joseph was also a mentor for the Masters of Science program at Dominican University of California. At Codexis, they provided translational support to the multi-disciplinary research team and helped shepherd therapeutic modalities from the bench to the clinic to support rare disease communities. At Theravance Biopharma US, Inc., their focus was on developing protocols for GLP PK/PD and toxicology studies to support the inhaled JAK inhibitor program. Currently, they are the Director of Translational Sciences at ReCode Therapeutics.

Joseph Chen earned a BA in Biology/Economics from Rutgers University in 2000. Joseph then completed a Master's degree in Biology/Biological Sciences at Rutgers University - Newark from 2000-2004. From 2005-2010, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Endocrinology and Animal Biosciences at Rutgers University. Afterwards, they went on to complete a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Reproductive Biology at the University of California, San Francisco from 2010-2014.
