Derek Rollend

Derek Rollend has extensive work experience in the field of computer vision and machine learning. Derek worked as a Senior Geospatial Data Scientist at Regrow Ag, where they led the transition of R&D prototype algorithms to production-level code, utilizing Google Earth Engine, Python, and Docker. Derek'srole involved exploratory data analysis and algorithm development for various remote sensing-based tasks related to estimating global agricultural practices.

Prior to that, Derek worked at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as a Computer Vision/Machine Learning Researcher. Derek led a team for the Climate TRACE project, applying machine learning to remote sensing and geospatial data to estimate road transportation emissions for 500 global cities. Derek defined and tracked progress towards milestones and goals, and made software and machine learning contributions to meet deadlines. Derek also trained machine learning models and deployed them on the Microsoft Planetary Computer for processing global Sentinel-2 imagery.

Before that, Derek worked at TrackMan as a Computer Vision Engineer, where they led the research, design, implementation, and optimization of a player tracking system for Major League Baseball. Derek also developed an object tracking algorithm for a product used in various challenging lighting conditions by golfers worldwide.

Derek also worked at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as a Computer Vision Engineer, where they worked on multiple projects focusing on embedded computer vision and machine learning applications. Derek'sprojects included assistive computer vision algorithm design, deep learning-based object recognition, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and object detection/tracking systems.

At the start of their career, Derek worked at Lockheed Martin as a Special Test Equipment Intern, where they helped update radar testbeds and improved existing test modules using programming languages such as C and LabVIEW. Derek also worked as a Research Experience for Undergraduates Intern at Iowa State University's Virtual Reality Applications Center, where they gained experience in HCI and development in various programming languages.
