Avionics Manufacturing & Test Intern - Fall 2024

Long Beach, United States

Job description

Company Overview:

At Relativity Space, we have two audacious goals: to build the next great commercial launch company with Terran R and to become America's leading force in additive manufacturing innovation. Both contribute to our long-term vision of creating humanity’s industrial base on Mars, paving the way for interplanetary life to expand the possibilities of the human experience. This journey begins right here on Earth – where we design, build, and fly rockets to deliver customer payloads to orbit. Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, fulfills the growing demand for launch capacity, thanks to our iterative approach that accelerates design, testing, and development while minimizing costs. While our groundbreaking research and development in 3D printing pushes the boundaries of large-scale additive manufacturing.

Your journey with us is more than just a job – it’s an opportunity to shape the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience alongside a community of passionate, creative individuals. Join us on this extraordinary journey, as we work together to transform our vision into reality.

About the Team:

The Avionics team is responsible for the full lifecycle of electronics, harnessing, enclosures and secondary structure, instrumentation, and GSE hardware central to operating Relativity's rockets. The team designs, builds, tests, integrates, and operates the hardware which controls the rocket in flight, downlinks critical telemetry, keeps the public safe, and deploys our customers' payloads to orbit! Our hardware enables Relativity to reliably control our rockets while maintaining the flexibility to rapidly iterate our designs. As a member of this team, you will design innovative hardware solutions capable of surviving harsh launch and space environments. Your designs will support multiple vehicle systems such as sensors, propulsion, computing, actuation, energy management, and communications.

The Avionics Manufacturing and Test team specifically supports the development of our manufacturing and test processes, tooling, and test system development.

About the Role:

To be successful in this role, you need to be a self-starter that can thrive in ambiguity, identify problems and quickly resolve them, and provide definition to the previously undefined. You should have a commitment to quality and the discipline required to achieve it. You will set the tone for how builds are structured, and work orders are written, how issues in the lab are addressed, and drive how test operations are run on flight hardware. You will be a trail blazer for the company, so you need to be self-motivated and able to influence both Engineering and Production to effectively implement your plans. Your day-to-day work will include both desk work such as writing work instructions, as well as hands on work such as setting up work areas, assembling hardware and running test operations.

About You:

  • Obtaining BS or MS in aerospace, mechanical, manufacturing, software or industrial engineering.
  • 1+ years relevant internship experience preferred, not required
  • Interest in typical manufacturing execution systems and quality management systems.
  • Experience developing/implementing assembly fixtures and jigs using CAD software.
  • Hands on electromechanical experience with PCBA soldering and wire harness assembly.
  • Lean manufacturing experience improving processes, managing projects and analyzing data.
  • Experience developing user interfaces/dashboards for manufacturing and test execution.
  • Experience calculating production, labor, and material costs, as well as estimating future needs for production.

  • Tested flight harnessing and interconnects
  • Implemented data logging systems to capture live test data
  • Worked on adding automation capabilities in manufacturing
  • Worked on test software to help run tests more often and more efficiently
  • Oversaw factory planning and layouts
  • Helped set up tracking dashboards to support live production execution
  • Printed rocket engine parts!
