Simon Gilbert

Machine Learning Engineer at Roots Automation

Simon Gilbert is a machine learning engineer at Roots Automation. Simon previously worked as a deep learning researcher at Boston University from November 2019 to May 2021, where they designed and built an end-to-end machine learning system for clinicians looking to provide idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients with an accurate prognosis. Simon also used transfer learning to adapt U-net for de-noising CT scans of COVID patients’ lungs in order to enhance scan clarity and decrease patient x-ray exposure. In addition, Simon created image captioning models with novel encoder/decoder pairs and evaluated performance using BLEU. Simon also implemented transformers with multi-head attention from scratch to improve caption generation performance by 11% over traditional model. Prior to that, Simon Gilbert was a physics teacher at Poly Prep Country Day School from September 2017 to June 2019. Simon also has experience as a machine learning programmer, having worked at Tian Laboratory, Boston University from December 2019 to March 2021.

Simon Gilbert received their Master of Science in Computer Engineering from Boston University and their B.A. in Physics from Oberlin College. Simon also attended The Calhoun School.
