Kevin Porter

Deputy Director at ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC

Educated at the universities of Sussex, Massachusetts, and the Institute of Education where, in 1997, he took an MA in Higher and Professional Education, he has worked as an academic administrator since 1985.

His early career was in quality assurance, first at the University of East London and then for the Council for National Academic Awards. He then moved to London Guildhall University (now part of London Metropolitan University) where he worked in governance and academic policy, as well as Quality Assurance.

He was appointed Academic Registrar of the Royal College of Music in 1994, then Secretary and Registrar in 1998, becoming Director of Academic & Administrative Affairs in 2006, Director of Operations in 2008 and Deputy Director in 2009.

Aside from his work for the RCM, Kevin has been a Coordinating Reviewer for the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, has been a Specialist Assessor for the Association of University Administrators Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice and, among other things, he was a member of HEFCE's TRAC(T) Steering Group which developed the costing methodology for teaching. He is currently Chairman of the Board of KCG shared services internal audit consortium.

From the late 1990s to 2007 he was Chairman of the Conservatoires UK Academic Administration Committee (and of its predecessor committees under the Federation of British Conservatoires) and he also chaired the Conservatoires UK initiative to develop a new admissions service for conservatoires, UCAS Conservatoires.

He has published on conservatoire management in the journal Studies in Higher Education: 'Management in the Conservatoire of the Future: administering or leading?'
