Mike Bessuille

Mike Bessuille is the current Director of Engineering, IDE at RStudio. Mike has also previously served as the Sr. Director, Product Development at Rogue Wave from October 2014 to August 2017. In this role, they were responsible for directing the Klocwork engineering organization and all aspects of product development for Klocwork, a leading static code analysis tool for C/C++, C#, and Java.

Under Mike's leadership, the organization was transformed from a reactive and chaotic development team into a quality-focused team that uses best software development practices. Mike accelerated the product development cycle from 1.5 years to 3 months by implementing Scrum, and delivered 8 out of 10 releases on time with 90% of committed objectives. Mike also balanced development effort across bugs, features, and strategic innovations, and drove quality improvements that reduced reactive customer-found bug fixes from over 60% to less than 20%.

In addition to their leadership roles, Mike is also credited with initiating infrastructure and refactoring projects to improve build and test systems, reducing full test automation from 24 hours to less than 2 hours. Mike also reduced the product backlog from 10,000 to 800 stories and bugs, dramatically improving responsiveness to customer tickets and overhauling the triage process.

Over the course of their career, Mike has managed a team of 45 developers, QA specialists, devops experts, support staff, and documentation professionals including a remote site. Mike has also represented the needs of the 50-person Ottawa office across all aspects of the organization as site leader.

Mike Bessuille has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo.
