Open Source Program Manager at RStudio

Tracy Teal is the current Open Source Program Manager at RStudio. Tracy has also served as the Executive Director for Dryad and The Carpentries (a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives). Tracy is a co-founder of Data Carpentry, and has served as its Executive Director for 2 years 8 months.

Tracy's previous work experience includes 6 years 7 months at Michigan State University, where they worked as an Assistant Professor, Research Associate, and NSF Postdoctoral Fellow in Biological Informatics & Postdoctoral Researcher. In these roles, Tracy developed and led bioinformatics consulting and training programs, facilitated bioinformatics analyses on high-performance computing, and developed open source bioinformatics software.

Tracy's research experience includes studying how microbial communities interact with and affect their environment, how agricultural practices affect soil microbial communities, and how those communities might affect changes in the production and consumption of the greenhouse gases, methane and nitrous oxide. Tracy has also worked with amplicon and metagenomic data to study soil microbial community composition and structure.

Tracy has also taught courses on Microbial Ecology and Microbiology as a Teaching Assistant for the Marine Biological Laboratory Microbial Diversity course and lecturer in Michigan State Microbiology course.
