A graduate of Edinburgh University, Eric Fraser joined the Royal Navy in 1976 and, during a 37-year career, served in a wide range of operational appointments both at sea and ashore.
During his time in uniform Eric commanded HMS GUERNSEY and HMS BOXER, served twice in the UK’s joint HQ and completed his career with a tour as UK Naval Attaché to the USA, based in Washington DC. He was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2009 and retired in early 2014.
Eric took up his role as Scotland’s first ever Veterans Commissioner soon after leaving the Royal Navy but recently stepped down having spent four years in this unique and hugely satisfying role. During his tenure he authored a series of reports for the Scottish Government that addressed issues such as Transition, Housing, Employability and Health. These included a number of recommendations – all of which have since been accepted by Ministers – which sought to improve how veterans are seen and supported in Scotland, but also promoting them and their families as significant assets within the workplace and wider community.
