Carey Thurston has a diverse work experience in the finance and accounting sector. They started their career as an Audit Associate at Douglas Coleman & Associates CPA, Inc. P.S. in 2001, where they conducted audits for various organizations. In 2004, they joined Grant Thornton LLP as a Senior Associate in Assurance Services. They then transitioned to the role of Controller at the Quileute Tribal Council in 2006.
In 2007, Thurston moved to the Samish Indian Nation, initially as a Controller and later took on the role of Chief Financial Officer. At Samish Indian Nation, they focused on compliance with federal regulations and implemented improvements in finance department processes. Thurston was responsible for recruiting new positions and developing strategies for programs with over 100 employees. They also managed vendor and carrier relationships.
In 2014, Thurston joined the YMCA of Greater Seattle as the Assistant Controller before becoming the Director of Grants & Contracts. In this role, they were the point of contact for external auditors, improved compliance with grant regulations, and analyzed funding sources.

Carey Thurston completed an AA degree in Business Transfer from Bellevue College between 1996 and 1999. Afterwards, from 1999 to 2001, Thurston pursued a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Accounting at Western Washington University.

The Samish Indian Nation is the successor to the large and powerful Samish Nation, a signatory to the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855. The Tribe's traditional territory stretches over a wide seven-county region of Northwest Washington. This area ranges from the mountain tops of the Cascades, westerly along the hills, woodlands, and river deltas, and the far western shores of the San Juan Islands.
