Research Matron at Sarah Cannon

Katie Matthews has a diverse and extensive work experience in the healthcare field. Katie started their career as a Student Nurse at Ramsay Health Care in 2013 and later joined Queensland Health as a Student Nurse in 2013 as well. In 2015, they transitioned to the role of Registered Nurse at Queensland Health, where they gained experience in Oncology & Hematology in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Katie'sresponsibilities included administering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive therapy, as well as assessing patients' physical and mental wellbeing. Katie also worked in the bone marrow transplant setting, administering stem cell transplants and following strict transplant protocols.

In 2018, Katie became a Clinical Trial Coordinator/Research Nurse at Queensland Health, where they coordinated care for trial participants and worked on multiple phase I and II studies in Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant trials. Katie attended meetings with investigators to ensure recruitment targets were met. In 2019, they joined Barts Cancer Institute as a Clinical Trial Coordinator, taking on the day-to-day running and coordination of international and national oncology trials in both Phase I and II settings. Katie liaised with international teams, chaired various committees, and managed trial groups.

In 2020, Katie joined the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Research Nurse, contributing to research efforts in the field. Most recently, they worked as a Sister at Leaders in Oncology Care from 2021 until 2022.

Katie'smost recent role is as a Research Matron at Sarah Cannon, where they started in 2022.

Katie Matthews has a diverse education history in the field of healthcare and leadership. Katie began their education at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) in 2012, where they pursued a Bachelor's degree in Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse. Katie completed this degree in 2014, obtaining their Registered Nurse certification from AHPRA (Australia Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) in February 2015.

After working as a Registered Nurse, Katie furthered their education by pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Cancer Nursing at QUT from 2018 to 2020. This certification allowed their to specialize in cancer care and expand their knowledge in the field.

In 2023, Katie embarked on an apprenticeship in Organizational Leadership from the Chartered Management Institute. This program, which lasted until 2025, equipped their with valuable skills in managing and leading teams within an organization.

In addition to their formal education, Katie has also obtained various certifications throughout their career. These include Level 4 Safeguarding from NSPCC in October 2022, Immediate Life Support from the Resuscitation Council UK in July 2021, Safeguarding Adults: Level 3 from FutureLearn in June 2021, and Registered Nurse (Adult) certification from The Nursing and Midwifery Council in December 2020. Katie also completed certifications such as Research Governance Study Start-Up from JRMO Queen Mary University London in March 2020, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) from Queen Mary University of London in December 2019, and various research-related certifications from institutions like Oxford University Press and the Medical Research Council.
