Aidan Phillips

Lead Electrical Engineer at Second Order Effects

Aidan Phillips has a diverse work experience in the electrical engineering field. In 2021, they began working as an Electrical Engineer at Second Order Effects, Inc. Prior to this, they were a Graduate Intern at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2020, where they proposed and designed a Gallium Nitride (GaN) based, hybrid switched-capacitor DC-DC converter for low-voltage, high current, high conversion ratio applications, and completed software development on a converter magnetics design tool. In 2019, they were a Graduate Fellow at the NSF Center for Space, High Performance and Resilient Computing (SHREC), and a Graduate Intern at Honeywell Aerospace USA. In 2018, they were an Intern, Embedded Systems at Moog Components, where they designed and simulated a digital control system for a 3-phase active front-end rectifier in a 3KW inverter system using Simulink, and implemented the Active Rectifier controller in C on a C2000 Ti Microcontroller. In 2017, they were an Intern, Avionics at Moog Inc., where they simulated FPGA design changes in VHDL and ModelSim to drive GSE stepper motors and their encoders, and performed derating analysis on flight level electronics boards according to NASA EEE-Inst-002 Standard. In 2014, they were an Intern, Failure Analysis at Moog Space and Defense Group, where they executed fault tree analyses on LVDT position accuracy failures, thermal battery power failures, and hall effect sensor failures, and designed, prototyped, and tested an inexpensive embedded system controlling a thermo-chamber to seal condition solenoid valves.

Aidan Phillips completed a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Penn State University in 2019. Aidan then obtained a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020.
