SFJAZZ is looking for an enthusiastic Director, Artistic Programming to join our Artistic Department. This role is one of the leaders of the organization and is responsible for artistic programming for SFJAZZ. The Director, Artistic Programming works closely with the Executive Artistic Director to plan and execute artistic programming for our blocks of programming (currently structured as annual season, summer festival and sessions, and special events and performances including the annual Gala, Listening Parties, Development Events, Salons, and Special Projects etc.)
The Director, Artistic Programming is also responsible, with other team members for fostering and developing the SFJAZZ Collective, collaborating on SFJAZZ Collective recording projects, touring opportunities and performances at the SFJAZZ Center.
Requirements:
Leadership: Lead and mentor the artistic department, fostering creativity, collaboration and innovation to support the organization's mission and strategic plan.
Engagement: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with external clients such as artists and their managers, arts organizations and venues (domestic and international) to serve the organization’s goals. Act as ambassador of and evangelist for SFJAZZ, representing the organization in a responsible way in all relevant internal and external settings. Continually learn about and seek out new talent, new artistic presentations and collaborations for possible presentation at SFJAZZ.
Team Collaboration: Engage with leadership team and colleagues at all levels, throughout the organization, ensuring collaboration for optimal synergy and further understanding of the financial matrixes surrounding each individual performance.
Functional:
Plan and execute the artistic programming for all artistic performances in collaboration and with approval from the Executive Artistic Director, including contract negotiation and execution.
Assist in the planning and execution of a cogent marketing, advertising and publicity plan for each presentation with the directors and/or professionals representing each division.
Collaborate throughout SFJAZZ to ensure efficient and optimal scheduling of venues, balancing rental and artistic uses.
Manage a team of employees with performance reviews, professional development and when required, disciplinary actions.
Participate in artistic presenter organizations and conferences.
Create new relationships with artists and their management to continually present fresh productions at SFJAZZ.
Qualification:
10+ years in artistic programming for performing arts organizations.
Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills.
Experience with legal artistic contracts, ability to negotiate contract terms.
High EQ and ability to handle conflict and difficult situations internally and externally.
Experience in managing employees.
Proven leadership skills in managing external and internal relationships.
Working Conditions
SFJAZZ has a hybrid work policy. This position is required to be onsite minimum 2 day/week. SFJAZZ produces events and performances all times of the day/week. Evenings/weekends may be required. Light travel may be required for this position.
