Marcel Gauthier

Head of School at Shanghai American School

Marcel Gauthier received his Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Marcel’s wife, Sharol, also an accomplished educator, has taught high school English, and previously taught at Shanghai American School, Puxi campus. They have two daughters, Sophie and Colette. His interests include running, Korean martial arts, writing, and spending time with his family.

Mr. Gauthier has a deep and rich background in education that informs all his work. A teacher and administrator in independent schools in the United States for over 25 years, he has held a variety of leadership positions: academic department chair, accreditation coordinator, curriculum coordinator, and high school principal. Prior to joining SAS as the Deputy Head of School at the Puxi campus, he was Deputy Head of School at Waterford School in Salt Lake City, Utah.

As Deputy Superintendent of the Puxi Campus, he helped lead faculty, staff, and administrators across both campuses to assure the finest teaching and learning for our students. He worked closely with the former Head of School, Richard W. Mueller, and the Board and understands the SAS community and our School’s strengths and challenges.
