Lorena A. Puto, Ph.D. has worked in the medical and scientific fields since 2000, beginning as a Research Associate at The Scripps Research Institute. During their time there, they conducted signal transduction research under the guidance of Dr. Gary Bokoch, resulting in a first-author publication in 2003. In 2005, they began their Ph.D. Candidate role at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, where they conducted research under the guidance of Dr. John C. Reed, resulting in a gene-specific mechanism for epigenetic modification and gene silencing. From 2009 to 2017, they worked as a Senior Research Fellow and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, where they conducted prostate cancer translational research and collaborated with the UCSD School of Medicine. This research culminated in several publications, including two first-author ones. From 2017 to 2018, they were a Project Scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 2020, they began working at Capricor Therapeutics, Inc. as a Senior Scientist, and in 2021 they moved to SIMPSON Healthcare as a Senior Medical Writer and Scientific Writer.

Lorena A. Puto, Ph.D. obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Molecular Medicine from Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in 2009. Prior to that, they obtained their Master of Science (MS) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from University of California, Riverside. Lorena A. Puto, Ph.D. completed their Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Biology & Chemistry from Point Loma Nazarene University.
