James Elliott has a diverse work experience in various roles and industries. James started their career as a Systems Developer at Epic Systems Corporation in 1994, where they designed and implemented core database features and graphical components for health-care applications. At Berbee, they worked as a Senior Software Engineer from 2000 to 2009, leading the implementation of IP paging and telephony solutions. During this time, they also invented a protocol for controlling IP-enabled loudspeakers and created tools for a consumer e-commerce site. At Singlewire Software, LLC, they worked as a Senior Software Engineer, focusing on IP notification solutions and developing applications for Apple's iOS platforms. In 2001, they joined O'Reilly Media as an Author, where they authored and co-authored several popular books on topics such as Hibernate and Java Swing. In 2013, they founded Deep Symmetry, a platform dedicated to sharing electronic music. As a DJ, they mixed and spun various genres of music in the Madison area.

James Elliott received their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science from Williams College in 1988. James then pursued their further education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where they earned their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science with a minor in Psychology in 1989. Finally, James attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1989 to 1993, where they obtained their Master of Science (MS) degree in Computer Science with a minor in Philosophy.
