Tony Gates is the Managing Director of Civil Engineering at Sir Robert McAlpine. Tony has over 25 years of experience in the engineering and construction industry.

Tony Gates began their career with Balfour Beatty in October 2011 as Director for New Business. In this role, they were responsible for winning new business for the company across all major projects sectors, including highways, infrastructure, and power & energy. Tony also oversaw a central engineering excellence team that won multiple awards for its innovative solutions.

In July 2012, Gates became Chairman of HTMA (Highways Term Maintenance Association). In this role, they led an executive team that increased membership, increased operating surpluses, launched a new strategy and structure, and appointed a new Executive Director and new Secretariat. As the immediate past Chairman, Gates remained a ex-officio member of the Executive Board until July 2015, and was an active member until April 2017.

Gates joined Sir Robert McAlpine in July 2014 as Managing Director of Civil Engineering. In this role, they are responsible for leading the company’s civil engineering business and delivering complex infrastructure projects across the UK.

Tony Gates began their educational career by studying civil engineering at the University of Birmingham. Tony then went on to study at University College School in London.

Tony Gates works with Alison Cox - Managing Director, London & Board Member, Andrew Hunter - Director of Engineering, and Steve Hudson - Group Commercial Director. Tony Gates reports to Paul Hamer, Chief Executive.
