Karina Barro has over 20 years of work experience. In 2020, they began working as the Chief Product Officer at Small Joys, where they lead the development of a mental health app, identifies trigger words for emotional insights, and creates a procedure manual for training counselors, primary care physicians, and psychiatrists. From 2007 to 2015, they worked as a School Psychologist at the NYC Department of Education and from 2015 to present, they have been an Adjunct Lecturer at the City University of New York - Brooklyn College. From 2005 to 2007, they worked as a School Psychologist at District 75, NYC Department of Education. From 2003 to 2005, they worked as an International Private Bank Compliance Project Manager at Israel Discount Bank, and from 1996 to 2003, they worked as a Vice President, Compliance Officer at J.P. Morgan.

Karina Barro obtained their Bachelor's Degree from CUNY Brooklyn College through the Thomas G. Labrecque Smart Start Program. Karina then attended Fairleigh Dickinson University-Metropolitan Campus from 2014 to 2018, graduating with a PsyD in Psychology. Karina has also obtained certifications as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and School Psychologist from New York State.
