Michael D'Angelo

VP of Engineering, Head of Machine Learning at SmileIdentity

Michael D'Angelo has a long and varied work experience. Michael began their career in 2011 as Program Manager for the University at Buffalo Nanosatellite Program, where they co-authored a grant to design and build a space telescope, established a budget and schedule from initial concept to launch, and led 60+ students through the system development life cycle. In 2013, they were an Engineering Intern at Facebook, where they extended log collection software in Python, performed statistical analysis with R, HQL to identify causal links for triage of malfunctioning servers, and worked with vendors and ODM's during triage. In 2014, they were an Avionics Intern at both Planet and Planetary Resources, Inc., where they built models incorporating sensor physics, astronomy, and optics to improve image signal-to-noise ratios and dynamic range in Python, developed satellite software in C++, wrote optical calibration software in Python, and developed simulations in Matlab for Attitude Determination and Control Subsystem. Additionally, they built flight hardware for Electrical Power Subsystem. In 2014, they also became Co-Founder, CTO of Arthena, an art-finance company that trades OTC derivatives using quantimental strategies. In this role, they set technical goals and was responsible for the success of the engineering and product teams. In 2022, they became VP of Engineering at Smile Identity.

Michael D'Angelo attended the University at Buffalo from 2009 to 2012, where they earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. Michael then attended Stanford University from 2016 to present, where they are pursuing a Master's Degree in Computational and Mathematical Engineering.
