Muhammad Afzal has a diverse range of work experience spanning over three decades. Muhammad is currently working at Smith Micro Software, Inc. as the VP - Systems and Solutions Engineering, a role they have held since October 2022. Prior to this, they served as the Technical Director - Systems and Solutions Engineering from September 2019 to October 2022, and as a Senior Systems Engineer from March 2015 to September 2019.
Before joining Smith Micro Software, Inc., Muhammad worked at Akustica as a System Reliability Engineer (Consultant) from December 2014 to March 2015, where they provided consultancy services on Design of Experiments for MEMS microphone products.
From 2007 to 2014, Muhammad worked at Tollgrade Communications as a Principal Systems Engineer. During this time, they contributed to the development of signal processing algorithms for a new service assurance method of NG-DSL systems.
Muhammad also has significant experience at Teradyne Broadband Test Division, where they worked as a Senior Research Scientist from July 2000 to August 2007. Here, they were responsible for the development of techniques for qualification and service assurance of telephone lines for DSL service. Muhammad played a pivotal role in researching market requirements and presenting research results to various clients.
Their earlier experiences include serving as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Material Assessment Research Group, Iowa State University, from January 1997 to July 2000. Here, they were involved in the development of DSP algorithms for NDT data analysis and played a key role in a research project on the automated analysis of magnetic flux leakage (MFL) data from gas pipeline inspection.
Muhammad's career began as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the ECprE Department, Iowa State University, from August 1995 to December 1996. Muhammad supervised senior-level labs and assisted with term projects in communication systems.
At the Center for Advanced Technology Development, Iowa State University, Muhammad worked as a Graduate Research Assistant from June 1992 to May 1994. Here, they were responsible for system modeling, simulation, and the design of digital signal processing algorithms.
Muhammad's earliest engineering experience was as an Engineer (Telecommunications) at the Water and Power Development Authority, Pakistan, from March 1990 to May 1991.
Muhammad Afzal has a strong educational background in Electrical Engineering. Muhammad completed their Ph.D. from Iowa State University from 1993 to 2000, followed by their M.S. degree from the same university from 1991 to 1993. Prior to that, they obtained their B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, although the name of the institution is not provided. Their academic journey began with a Fellowship of Science in Pre-Engineering, which they achieved from Edwardes College, Peshawar, during the period of 1981 to 1983.
